“Excellent service. Microsuction was painless and results great. Can definitely recommend. My partner was happy too, as he was treated for free on two for one deal”.

Ms Norma Roma

We use 3 methods to remove wax: microsuction, irrigation, and dry tool removal.

We have been trained specifically for each wax removal method.

What is ‘micro-suction’? – a microsuction unit acts like a mini-hoover and consists of a small suction pump which has a 1m length of tubing with a suction probe connected on the end. We place a funnel/specula in the ear and carefully suction the wax out.

This is particularly efficient for fairly firm wax.

What is ‘Irrigation’? – we use Guardian ProJet irrigation units for reliability and performance. These devices exert a a pulsing spray of warm water into the ear to flush out softer wax. Irrigation is perfectly safe if the clinician  appropriately controls the water flow pressure and angle of spray.

Irrigation is best for soft ear wax.

Guardian Pro Jet Irrigator

Dry tool ear wax removal – we have a selection of additional tools for hard stubborn ear wax including mini-forceps and specially designed probes.

Often ear wax can bind to the shedding skin of the ear and can tangle with hairs making it very difficult to remove with irrigation and microsuction – often we have to use all three methods in one ear with such ear wax.

  • Your local GP surgery – free, but long waiting times of possibly 1-2 months, and they only use the irrigation method which can be less effective for hard wax – hence why they ask you to use drops for two weeks.
  • A local hearing care centre – quicker appointments, varied techniques including micro-suction, no need for ear drops.

Firstly, micro-suction is pain free and 99% effective – we very rarely fail.

Use of ear-drops beforehand is not normally necessary. We will advise if you need to use drops to complete the procedure.

The equipment includes a suction pump, a length of tubing connected to a suction probe, and a small funnel placed into the ear canal.

The operative wears a pair of magnifying surgical glasses with a headlamp to get a good look into the ear.

The wax is then removed by suction by placing the probe carefully through the funnel.

The process can be very quick if the wax is loose. If the wax is very soft then it can be easier to remove via gentle syringing. If the wax is very hard then 2 or even 3 visits may be required, but we only charge for one visit. For very hard wax it may be necessary to use Otex ear drops.
