More Information
What is ‘Microsuction’ Ear Wax Removal?
The image shows a typical mobile microsuction unit/pump. Microsuction units can also be much larger for heavier-duty clinical purposes.
A microsuction pump acts like a gentle mini-vacuum and consists of a compact suction pump unit connected to a length of medical tubing (approximately 1 metre long) with a precision suction probe attached at the end. We place a sterile, funnel-shaped speculum into the patient’s ear canal to carefully and accurately suction the wax away. It is imperative that the clinician maintains uninterrupted visibility throughout and wears specialist magnification loupes equipped with a focused headlight.
This technique is particularly efficient for firm, stubborn ear wax.
Is Microsuction Ear Wax Removal Safe?
Ear wax removal is an invasive procedure carried out within an exceptionally delicate and sensitive part of the body. There are varying clinical risks associated with each technique – microsuction, irrigation, and dry tool ear wax removal.
Certain minor risks are recognised, occur routinely, and are deemed clinically acceptable – for example, dry skin may gently lift away from the canal wall, resulting in mild temporary soreness or slight superficial spotting. Conversely, other complications are far more severe and strictly unacceptable, such as a perforated eardrum.
The calibrated suction level of the pump is always verified prior to commencing treatment as part of our rigorous clinical risk assessment. All clinical risks must be thoroughly understood, managed, and controlled.
- Specialist Clinical Accreditation: In order to manage procedural safety, practitioners must hold appropriate training. At Crystal Hearing, our clinicians have been formally trained and certified by the Rotherham Primary Ear Care Centre.
- Governing Standards: To manage risks systematically, our team adheres strictly to practice guidelines laid out by the British Society of Audiology (BSA).
- Documented Review Controls: Crystal Hearing maintains dedicated risk assessments for every removal technique, establishing clear review and control methods. For your reassurance, our full protocol can be inspected directly: View our Microsuction Risk Assessment (PDF).
- Pre-Treatment Consent: Prior to undertaking ear wax removal, it is imperative that each patient completes a clinical consent form clearly outlining all relevant medical contraindications and procedural precautions.
What is ‘Irrigation’ Ear Wax Removal?
Ear irrigation uses a specialized, electronic pumped water spray – typically pulsing at a carefully calibrated, controlled pressure to safely dislodge and wash away softer cerumen build-ups.
Traditional ear syringing historically relied on a rigid metal hand syringe requiring manual pressure, which carries unpredictable force. At Crystal Hearing, we do not use manual ear syringes.
Instead, we utilize the clinical-grade ‘Guardian ProJet’ irrigation unit, chosen specifically for its proven clinical reliability and precision pressure delivery.
These devices deliver a gentle, pulsing stream of warm water into the ear canal to flush out softer wax accumulations safely and comfortably.
- Temperature Controlled: The water is strictly maintained at body temperature, as cold or uncalibrated water can induce caloric dizziness and disorientation.
- Calibrated Safety: Irrigation is completely safe when the clinician expertly governs the water pressure, flow velocity, and angle of spray toward the canal wall.
- Illuminated Magnification: Our audiologists always carry out irrigation using high-magnification surgical loupes and focused LED illumination, ensuring clear, continuous visibility of the ear canal and tympanic membrane throughout.
Dry Tool Ear Wax Removal
We maintain a comprehensive selection of specialist clinical tools designed specifically for hard, stubborn ear wax. These include precision mini-forceps and purpose-built ear probes – some featuring delicate hooks and others engineered with fine screw threads.
Frequently, ear wax binds tightly to the shedding epithelial skin lining of the canal wall and tangles with fine hairs. This adhesion makes extraction exceptionally difficult to achieve using irrigation or microsuction alone.
These manual instruments can be essential for dislodging and extracting heavily compacted, stubborn ear wax.
- Specialist Precision Instruments: Mini-forceps and curved hook or threaded probes enable gentle, controlled mechanical release without trauma to canal walls.
- Synergistic Clinical Methods: It may occasionally prove necessary to combine all three methods – microsuction, irrigation, and dry tools – to resolve deep-seated impactions safely.
- Senior Clinical Expertise: Our audiologists are certified in advanced ear care and have completed tens of thousands of successful treatments, ensuring complete peace of mind.
Paediatric Age Restriction Notice
We cannot undertake ear wax removal on anyone under 18 years old.
This policy is strictly enforced in accordance with statutory UK clinical regulations and professional practice standards, and must be adhered to without exception.
Please be entirely honest regarding your child’s age when arranging an appointment. Undertaking ear wax removal on a minor would violate our regulatory indemnity and clinical governance protocols, placing both our practitioners and practice at significant risk should procedural complications arise.
If your child requires cerumen removal, please consult a clinic holding dedicated paediatric audiology accreditation.
